Virtual Desktop lets you wirelessly stream VR games and applications from your PC to your VR headset. Now the VR app is available for the HTC Vive Focus 3 and Vive XR Elite.

Virtual Desktop is one of the most popular and widely used VR applications. It lets you use your own computer in virtual reality to watch movies, surf the web, or play PC games on a giant screen.

And it all works completely wirelessly. The app lets you connect up to four computers to your VR headset and switch between them.

Virtual Desktop is now available for the HTC Vive Focus 3 and Vive XR Elite, HTC’s two latest VR headsets. The app is available in the Viveport store for $19.

How Virtual Desktop works

Virtual Desktop requires a VR-enabled PC running Windows 10 or 11, or a Mac running at least MacOS Mojave.

Your computer must be connected to a 5GHz AC or AX router via an Ethernet cable. You’ll also need to download the free Virtual Desktop Streamer application from the website VRDesktop.

After installing the app on your PC and headset, log in with the same account. Then select the VR headset you want to use.

Now you can either start the desktop mode to use the computer in VR or the VR mode to stream PC VR content. You can adjust various settings such as resolution, refresh rate, or bitrate.

Virtual Desktop: Not quite bug-free yet

Virtual Desktop’s developer, Guy Godin, states on the application’s Viveport website that there are currently two known issues. First, there are rendering issues with 3D spherical and dome videos, and second, there are stability issues when playing videos from the Video tab.

Godin announces that these problems will be fixed in future updates. In the past, Godin has improved the performance of the virtual desktop and implemented a feature that increases the resolution of the PC VR.
