Jio releases its first “VR headset” for the equivalent of just 15 US-Dollars. However, it is primarily intended for watching cricket matches.

Cricket is very popular in India. The annual Indian Premier League (IPL) is arguably the most watched sporting event in the country. IPL 2023 will take place up to and including May 28 and will be broadcast by Jio Cinema, the on-demand streaming service of Indian telecommunications company Reliance Jio.

To mark the occasion, Reliance Jio is launching its first VR headset. Called JioDive, it allows fans to experience IPL 2023 matches on a 100-inch virtual screen with a 360-degree view of the stadium. Of course, the JioDive is also suitable for VR movies and apps.

Not comparable to VR headset from Meta and Pico.

However, it is not expected to have the same image quality as Meta Quest 2 or Pico 4. The JioDive is a smartphone VR headset. However, Reliance Jio plans to offer its customers more VR and XR experiences in the future. For example, the company is currently working on another VR headset called JioGlass, which will have advanced features.

Specifications of the JioDive

To use JioDive, users will need a smartphone (Android 9 and above or iOS 15 and above) with a display size between 4.7 and 6.7 inches, as well as a gyroscope and accelerometer. Other features, such as image quality, depend on the specifications of the phone.

The JioDive weighs 325 grams without the smartphone. Depending on the smartphone, a weight of up to 525 grams is possible. This would make the JioDive heavier than a Meta Quest 2. The weight could prove problematic during longer sessions, as the headband gives the impression that it only provides insufficient comfort.

In return, the VR headset has external dials that can be used to adjust the distance of the lenses to your eyes and to each other. There is also a click button integrated into the headset for rudimentary operations inside the VR.

Price and availability

Jio offers the JioDive for 1,299 Indian rupees (about 15 US-Dollars). It is available on the official websites of Jio and JioMart. However, it can only be ordered within India. Furthermore, the JioDive only works with the JioImmerse app, which is reserved for Jio customers.
