Ubisoft wants to realize Assassin’s Creed in VR for Meta Quest. The “Forward” event revealed playable characters and the levels’ open layout.
Three years after the casual announcement of Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, Ubisoft has finally shown a trailer for the first VR game in the successful series. The publisher confirmed that players of the Quest title will take on the roles of Ezio Auditore da Firenze (in Renaissance Italy) Cassandra (in ancient Greece) and Connor Kenway (in colonial Boston). Some fans already decoded their appearance as playable heroes on Twitter before the event.
Players will move freely through open maps and interact with responsive historical figures, civilians, and enemies. That doesn’t sound like a completely open world like in other installments. However, movement through the chapters could be less linear than first rumors suggested.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR: Open world for Meta Quest?
Instead of gameplay impressions, there were only short pre-rendered scenes and screenshots to see. They confirmed at least some of the things that leaks have already revealed. In the trailer, the protagonists ran through narrow alleys, fought with weapons like swords and bows, or surprised enemies with hidden daggers after jumping from above.
Course, stealth and combat will play an important role, explained community developer Clement Dagonneau of Ubisoft Montreal. In between, “immersive film sequences” will provide a cinematic atmosphere. The separate route mode can also be freely explored. Ubisoft explains:
“Explore and move freely in Parkour mode. The Nexus contains diverse, historically accurate locations that can be traversed in all directions. In Parkour mode, you can move freely and climb anything to achieve your goals in your own way.”
In the new story, Abstergo Industries has found a way to retrieve powerful lost artifacts that can be used to manipulate people’s beliefs. To thwart the plan, players will play as the aforementioned assassins and uncover new stories and missions.
Combat is designed to be intuitive, according to Ubisoft. It revolves around blocking, parrying, counterattacking and dueling with “responsive” opponents. All attacks are performed with the player’s own movementssuch as drawing the bow or throwing an axe.
Silent assaults in Assassin’s Creed VR
The arsenal also includes tomahawks, crossbows, throwing knives and smoke bombs. Furthermore, sneaking will once again be an important tactic, including the aerial assassinations hinted at in the trailer. The Developers are also working on “a comprehensive set of convenience features to accommodate gamers of all types with VR sensitivities”.
Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR will be released for Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro in winter of 2023. It was previously announced that the game is being developed at Ubisoft’s Red Storm Entertainment, with support from Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Mumbai and Reflections.
